Guided Austrian Snowshoe Short Breaks

Guided Austrian Snowshoe Short Breaks

Welcome to our winter snowshoe walking holidays!  This season we are based in the Tyrol region of Austria, only 30 minutes drive from Innsbruck Airport & City. Our accommodation is located in the mountain town of Seefeld. The town is one of five which occupy the ‘high plateau’ of Tyrol’, sitting at around 1,200 metres. Seefeld is ideal as a base to get out on snowshoes on ‘unpisted’ terrain or, if you want an easier day you can walk with ‘snow spikes’ on the ‘groomed’ trails of the ‘Wildmoose Nature Park’, which borders the west of the village. We have plenty of options for routes, directly from the village, by using the train or bus to travel locally to a start point or use of our private transport. Your guide will decide on the best option each day after assessing the weather conditions and avalanche report. So the itinerary below, which is our plan, may be changed for your safety. Please keep this in mind.

About walking on snowshoes or snow spikes.

If you can walk, you can snowshoe. Any boot can be attached to a snowshoe binding (usually a strap and heel clip-in system) and off you go! Walking poles with ‘snow basket attachments (to stop the pole from sinking too deeply into the snow) although not essential, will help with balance and help you build up speed if you want. Snow spikes are slipped onto your boots with a rubber rand attachment and enable you to get good grip when walking on ‘groomed paths (snow that has been compacted to make walking easier). These paths are normally found in parks on flat terrain.

About our Guided Austrian Snowshoe Weekend breaks

Our weekend breaks are specifically designed for those who would like to immerse themselves in the winter scenery and enjoy walking outdoors. We do not ‘race’, it’s better to stay warm without breaking a sweat and there is a focus on observing the nature of the landscape as well as the journey. On each walk you will be able to sample local delicacies as we stop at an Alm (hut) for lunch each day.  Your guide will brief you about this on each days route before you set off.  Our routes usually vary between 10-15 kilometres and we are generally out for about 5-7 hours per day, departing at 9 am each morning after breakfast.

Our trips are designed for a group size of 6 -12

Friday, Day 1 – Arrive at Innsbruck, Tyrol region, Austria

Your guide will meet you at the Airport or Bahnhof and will drive you to our accommodation at the Hotel Helga, Seefeld, around a 30 minute drive from the airport. How fit do I need to be?

This trip is suitable for anyone who is a regular mountain walker. You will need to carry a medium sized rucksack (a maximum of 30 Litres in size) and the total weight based on the kit list provided should not exceed 10 kilograms.

What type of clothing do i need to bring?

Waterproof walking boots (Gortex or similar), waterproof jacket & trouser, gloves, hats. Thermal base layers, Thin fleeces, Down jacket or Woollen jumpers. DO NOT bring ski Jackets/trousers to walk in (this type of clothing is to insulated for walking and you will quickly overheat). You will receive advice regarding clothing when you book. As long as you have waterproofs & boots you do not need to rush out and buy a lot of expensive branded clothing.

How long will we be walking for each day?

You should expect to be trekking for 5-9 hours per day, based on a walking speed of 3 kilometres per hour, known to some as ‘Alpine plod’. It’s not a race and there is plenty of time for taking in the scenery and stopping for picnic lunches on route. The tracks and paths are rocky in places, but of good quality. There are some narrow paths throughout the journey which have a high level of exposure.

Can we customise the experience?

Alpine Walk’s guided walking tours are all about the personal touch. We will plan your journey along a range of different routes that provide different challenges based on what you want from your walking break. Do you want the best views? Do you want the chance to experience some of the local wildlife?

So if you are considering this journey and need to discuss your requirements, please feel free to contact us. We’ll arrange a chat on Skype to discuss your personal tour.
