Guided Austrian Snowshoe Week
Guided Austrian Snowshoe week
Welcome to our winter snowshoe walking holidays! This season we are based in the Tyrol region of Austria, only 30 minutes drive from Innsbruck Airport & City. Our accommodation is located in the mountain town of Seefeld. The town is one of five which occupy the ‘high plateau’ of Tyrol’, sitting at around 1,200 metres. Seefeld is ideal as a base to get out on snowshoes on ‘unpisted’ terrain or, if you want an easier day you can walk with ‘snow spikes’ on the ‘groomed’ trails of the ‘Wildmoose Nature Park’, which borders the west of the village. We have plenty of options for routes, directly from the village, by using the train or bus to travel locally to a start point or use of our private transport. Your guide will decide on the best option each day after assessing the weather conditions and avalanche report. So the itinerary below, which is our plan, may be changed for your safety. Please keep this in mind.
About walking on snowshoes or snow spikes.
If you can walk, you can snowshoe. Any boot can be attached to a snowshoe binding (usually a strap and heel clip-in system) and off you go! Walking poles with ‘snow basket attachments (to stop the pole from sinking too deeply into the snow) although not essential, will help with balance and help you build up speed if you want. Snow spikes are slipped onto your boots with a rubber rand attachment and enable you to get good grip when walking on ‘groomed paths (snow that has been compacted to make walking easier). These paths are normally found in parks on flat terrain.

About our Guided Austrian Snowshoe Weekend breaks
Our tours are specifically designed for those who would like to immerse themselves in the winter scenery and enjoy walking outdoors. We do not ‘race’, it’s better to stay warm without breaking a sweat and there is a focus on observing the nature of the landscape as well as the journey. We try to include one break at a hut where you can get hot drinks and a snack or some lunch, your guide will brief you about this on each days route before you set off. Our routes usually vary between 10-15 kilometres and we are generally out for about 5-7 hours per day, departing at 9 am each morning after breakfast.
Our trips are designed for a group size of 6 -12
Saturday, Day 1 – Arrive at Innsbruck, Tyrol region, Austria
Your guide will meet you at the Airport or Bahnhof and will drive you to our accommodation at the Hotel Helga, Seefeld, around a 30 minute drive from the airport. Check in and settle in. Your guide will notify you of a time and place to meet in the hotel for a welcome introduction and issue of snowshoes & spikes. They will also organise and accompany you to dinner on the first evening.
Sunday, Day 2 – Walk 1 – Birgitzköpfl
Axams – Birgitzkopfl summit, Axams
A 25 minute drive from the hotel just south of the village of Axam, brings us to the north slopes and the fringe of the Stubai Park. This area is noted for its moderate slopes and is an excellent first day out for beginners on snowshoes. Lunch at the Birgitzer Alm (hut) at 1,840 metres before a short walk on to the nearby Birgitzköpfl summit, 1,982 metres, before our forest descent.
Lunch: Birgitzalm
Height Gain/Loss: 700m. Distance: 12 – 13 kilometres. Time allowed: 6 hours
Monday, Day 3 – Walk 2
Seefeld – Wildmoosalm – Brunschkopf Summit ( 1,510m) – Moserer Hohe 1,474m) – Seefeld
We start from our hotel, heading west from the village to enter the Wild Moose Nature Park. A paradise of ice sparkling forests with deep snow and sunny glades
Height Gain/Loss: 380m. Distance: 12 – 12 kilometres. Time allowed: 6 hours
Tuesday, Day 4 – Walk 3
Seefeld – Mosern Village – Ropferstub’m (lunch) – Seefeld
Leaving the village we are walking through pine forests, passing villages of rustic snow covered dwellings and visiting the Lottensee Lake on route to our lunch stop at the Ropferstub’m located at the foot of the Hohe Munde, a 2,500m peak.
Height Gain/Loss: 300m. Distance: 15 kilometres. Time allowed: 7 hours
Wednesday, Day 5 – Walk 4 – Gaistalalm circuit
Car park – Hämmermoosalm – Gaistal Alm – car park
A short 15 minute drive from our hotel brings us to Gaistal Valley, a refuge for wildlife. We set off on a gentle climb through the forest following a circuit that brings us to the Hämmermoosalm (coffee stop). Continuing through pastures and forest we arrive at Gaistal Alm for lunch. Afterwards we return directly along the plateau to the car park. *This route may be reversed in order to accommodate group lunch booking.
Height Gain/Loss: 320m. Distance: 12 kilometres. Time allowed: up to 7 hours
Thursday, Day 6, Walk 5
Scharnitz Nature Park – Pleisenhutte – Scharnitz
A 15 minute drive north brings us to the outskirts of the village of Scharnitz, close to the border with Germany. We are heading up the mountainside onto the western flank of the Birkkarspitze Massif (2,749m). On route a glance to the left through gaps in the treeline will give you views of the mountain summits forming part of the border – predominantly Linderspitze (2280m) & Wendelspitze (2385m). We arrive at Pleisenhutte for lunch. The afternoon return journey is spent criss-crossing the forest slopes.
Height Gain/Loss: 780m. Distance: 15 kilometres. Time allowed: 8 hours
Friday, Day 7, Walk 6 Seewald – Hohe Fluder (1,628m)
Seewald – Hohe Fluder – Zunteregg – Seewald
A beautiful walk and climb up onto an isolated ridge with views of Simmelberg to the South and the Arnspitze summits to the north. We carry a picnic and hot drinks to enjoy on the summit. This is a beautiful circuit but it does not have the luxury of a hut. It is therefore possible that the itinerary may be swopped so that this route is undertaken on a day when the sun is at it’s best, for our lunch stop!
Height Gain/Loss: 520m. Distance: 11 kilometres. Time allowed: 6 hours
Drive time: 10 minutes from hotel

How fit do I need to be?
This trip is suitable for anyone who is a regular mountain walker. You will need to carry a medium sized rucksack (a maximum of 30 Litres in size) and the total weight based on the kit list provided should not exceed 10 kilograms.
What type of clothing do i need to bring?
Waterproof walking boots (Gortex or similar), waterproof jacket & trouser, gloves, hats. Thermal base layers, Thin fleeces, Down jacket or Woollen jumpers. DO NOT bring ski Jackets/trousers to walk in (this type of clothing is to insulated for walking and you will quickly overheat). You will receive advice regarding clothing when you book. As long as you have waterproofs & boots you do not need to rush out and buy a lot of expensive branded clothing.
How long will we be walking for each day?
You should expect to be walking for 5 -8 hours per day, based on a walking speed of 3 kilometres per hour, known to some as ‘Alpine plod’. It’s not a race and there is plenty of time for taking in the scenery and stopping for picnic lunches on route. The tracks and paths are of good quality and some times we will be off path ‘bashing’ through fresh snow!
Can we customise the experience?
Alpine Walk’s guided walking tours are all about the personal touch. We will plan your journey along a range of different routes that provide different challenges based on what you want from your walking break. Do you want the best views? Do you want the chance to experience some of the local wildlife?
So if you are considering this journey and need to discuss your requirements, please feel free to contact us. We’ll arrange a chat on Skype to discuss your personal tour.
